Yes! Growing your own food is damn hard. It requires a lifetime of acquired skills and an ability to take disappointments in stride without giving up. I'm not even close to feeling like I could raise the amount of food my grandparents raised and I've been gardening for quite a long time. I have a small backyard where I do container gardening and raised beds. It's a hobby which gives me the luxury of failing without starving, but I keep at it because I love knowing that my skill level is growing each season. It makes me feel less vulnerable.
