We are Who We Are

This is Me

The gang (my photo)

I’m a professional myth buster.

I write about cultural expectations and how much control they have over our lives, far more than laws ever will. All cultures pass on a worldview to the next generation that doesn’t make it easy to be who we were born to be. That’s a shame, too. We are who we are, and whenever we try to pretend we’re somebody else, it makes us miserable.

So, here’s who I am. Well, at least in part this is me…

I’m an atheist, which makes some of my religious friends uncomfortable.

I’m not a patriot, which makes even some of my atheist friends uncomfortable.

I don’t believe in soul mates, which makes just about everyone uncomfortable.

I think too many people have babies for the wrong reasons and then fuck up their kids.

I get really pissed off by those people who justify hitting children.

I’m a pacifist, which confuses peace lovers who carry guns and infuriates religious people who think god is on our side.

I’m an outspoken woman, a fact that annoys some people.

I think marriage has not proven to be highly successful and that more people would be better off living alone but enjoying the company of a friend with benefits.

I’m not very materialistic, which stuns those that love stuff.

I live debt free with the lowest overhead possible. That bewilders conservatives who are as head over heels in debt as any liberals they choose to discredit.

I’m an introvert who enjoys small intimate gatherings and one-on-one-deep conversations, which amazes my outgoing extrovert friends.

I travel so light as to qualify for a prize in the over-sixty-hippie-backpacker competition, much to the amazement of my shoe-loving friends.

I’m a pragmatist. I’m never surprised that I don’t get everything I desire, much to the disappointment of my idealistic friends.

I don’t see life as a gift but as an accident where I wasn’t given a playbook or a map and must use my wits to survive. It concerns my friends who believe there is a reason for everything that happens.

I believe girls should be encouraged to be monetarily independent, so they’ll never be forced to live with a man just for his money.

I value my independence and autonomy because I see myself as a sovereign being, not an extension of someone else’s dreams.

I prefer diversity to a monotone sameness, much to the anger of the far right.

I get bored with small talk, which makes provincial people anxious.

I don’t enjoy club memberships, even though most humans need a group.

I think variety is the spice of life, much to the discomfort of those who prefer to live the same day over and over.

I love change, new faces, new places, and new ideas.

I’ve been exploring this planet for as long as I can remember, much to the shock of my friends who’ve never owned a passport.

It keeps me up at night when I see people who suffer, much to the confusion of those who register low on the empathy scale.

I’ve got more than a bit of the prepper in me. I’m always looking for ways to beat the system.

Adventure is my drug. I thrive when stepping outside my comfort zone.

I’m loyal to the few I’ve chosen to be my peeps, but I don’t need a lot of people.

Anyone who knows me well probably won’t be surprised at many things on this list. When I think back over the years, I can honestly say that who I am is the core of who I was as a child. I think I was born to be me.

What about you?
