The closest I’ve gotten to practicing spirituality as an atheist who was raised in an evangelical cult is embracing the beliefs of humanism. This is what I’ve come away with.

No God has ever fed a hungry child. Humans must do that. And although we may be alone in the universe, that is, no God is out there with his eye us listening to our prayers and helping us to become the best we can be, humans don’t need a God, in order to feel compassion and a commitment to making the world a better place for the children they insist on giving birth to. I definitely feels a connection even a sense of oneness with the universe and all other living creatures.

It’s humans doing for others that fills that void that people try to fill with a God. Because in the end, the only time a miracle is performed is when humans decide to step up and help each other out.
