Our tribal instincts, even our world cultures, are a result of cooperation with one another to solve big problems rather than competing with one another or even standing alone in order to live a life with no personal compromises.

America has a strong tendency to promote the ideal of going it alone. That's why libertarians to a greater or lesser degree continue to thrive in our culture. For example, we have middle class values that insists on booting our own offspring out of the house as early as possible. I say it's a middle class value because the rich guard family wealth and the poor must rely on one another for many basic requirements. The middle class are ruthless with their own offspring, however.

However. lots of other countries practice the ideal of extended family where everyone benefits but are also beholden to one another from grandma and grandpa to Uncle Pete to all the cousins, forevermore.

I've lived in both types of cultures and there is something to be said for each one, but when things get rough, I think most humans desire the comfort that support provides.

I've only met one or two mountain men type who could withdraw from society and live off grid with almost no support from anyone. They're fascinating, but few and far between. I'm not a libertarian, but I don't really like people as a whole, so I think I like to imagine myself living off grid far from the madding crowd.
