My Unsolicited Opinion — a Short Piece While On the Road

War is wrong. One reason I don’t believe in gods is because they are a warring, vindictive lot created in the image of human beings.

War is a sin. I don’t believe in sin, however, largely because the sin haters are most often the sin makers. I’m a humanist. We believe that it’s our duty to create a better world for the children we INSIST on bringing into the world. We’re failing, too.

There are no good guys. Humans have a long history of building something nice and then tearing it down.

War is news and war makes money.

As a species we’ve made remarkable technological progress. Socially, however, we’re cavemen with cell phones.

Do I have hope? No more or less than I ever did. It’s always been the best of times and the worst of times.

What do I do? I try to live in the moment. I’m grateful humans don’t live forever. Planned obsolescence is a good thing. I’m glad I’m old. I’ve had enough bad news to last many lifetimes.

So, I sit with what’s left of nature. I stay involved for the sake of my offspring. I speak out when necessary. I avoid people whenever wise to do so.

I didn’t ask to be born. If I had been asked first, I might have chosen to stay wherever I was before I was born. I have no memories of it so maybe it wasn’t half bad.

Is this a bleak view? No. It’s reality. The birds don’t get to choose the world they inherit and neither do I. Feeling sorry for myself is most likely a direct result of my perceived position of privilege. I’m just another living creature on a planet that thrives on death giving way to new life. In the grand scheme of things I’m no more important than the bluebird.

War will always be because humans can’t cooperate even if it kills them.
