My Thoughts on WAR This Morn/Writing On my iPhone While Traveling

I have always opposed the next war. Always. What’s happening in Ukraine is another horrible act of violence in a long long line of wars down through the ages.

I came into this world while my dad was fighting in the Korean War. He met me for the first time after he was wounded and sent home. I was nine months old.

I was a youth of the 60s and lived through the looooong Vietnam War. Another undeclared war that killed so many.

I remember my first trips to Europe when I told many people that I was Canadian because Americans weren’t terribly popular at the time. The US was invading Iraq supposedly in search of weapons of mass destruction at the time.

I distinctly remember sitting in a Maine restaurant prior to the invasion with a group of friends and I was the ONLY one who opposed the idea of starting another undeclared war. I thought it so strange that my peers from the Vietnam era now had children old enough to send to Iraq. Some of these peers had opposed the Vietnam war but were gung-ho to invade Iraq.

Humans can’t seem to do better. Our big brains keep us going down the same path as our ancestors.

My son was attending college in Germany when the wall came down. He brought me back a piece of it.

Now fascism is making gains in Poland, Hungary, even Italy. Spain fights to hang on to their current status as the VOX party gains power inch by inch. The western world is struggling to hang on.

Yet, the war in the Ukraine overshadows our recent memories, making it almost impossible to see ourselves clearly.

It never ends, I guess. Always always always …someone willing to invade and destroy, injure and kill, without exception.
