My situation was the opposite. I grew up in a religious cult where I was physically, emotionally, and sexually abused. When I left home and the church at 18, my parents disowned me. I had to transition from the cult to mainstream culture with no money, friends, drivers license, or car. Family dynamics are often highly destructive to the development of a child.
