Marriage vows and the concept of being recognized as legally married haven’t always been around. Divorce certainly wasn’t prevalent in America until recently. Now, divorce is totally normalized and sanctioned even by the devout. There’s an underlying belief that’s a bit patriarchal in nature that marriage is legal ownership. Of course, the need for personal autonomy tells us otherwise, and even in the most patriarchal society, most people require some individual rights. All of the rules and social limitations put upon us by our cultures are nothing more than human constructs, and vary according to the culture that we were gifted at birth. Monogamy is one of those cultural expectations within our American heritage that is fading slowly but surely, and most likely evolving Into another construct in the future.
