Laugh at Me If You Will, but Climate Change Will Determine the Next Prime Properties

Even Insurance Companies Know This

Land above the 45th parallel (my photo)

I just had a man respond to a comment I made to a Medium article about where people will be moving in the future. I was offering another perspective by sharing information about where the future prime properties will be located according to climate scientists. Most are consistently reporting that land above the 45th parallel will become increasingly more attractive to people living on coastlines and in drought or storm prone areas of the country.

“Sorry, but it makes me laugh a little to think of coastline people running as “refugees” for the weather of the Midwest.”

He wasn’t able to comprehend why scientists are predicting such measures. Most people can’t. But if we continue down the road we’re going, climate change catastrophes, shortage of water, intensely destructive storms, and the expense of rebuilding regions over and over again will begin to take its toll.

Ha ha right back at you, I thought. Of course, I know he knows that I didn’t mean that people will run in huge masses to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, for example. That’s rarely the way things work. It’ll be gradual but as insurance companies refuse to insure properties that are high risk, even those who love their homes on the coast will be forced to leave.

This is our reality. It hasn’t quite caught up with us, but it will. We’re still in the wishful thinking phase of the impending new norm. However, as the cost of repairing damages done to our infrastructures, homes, and buildings continue to soar, it will be harder and harder to ignore.

The water problem alone is an increasing nightmare. There’s too many people using water from limited water sources to allow many regions to support large populations.

The U.S. is lucky to have the Great Lakes which hold 20% of the entire world’s fresh water. 20% of the ENTIRE world’s fresh water.

Do I need to repeat that again? Because that alone is priceless. Water is now on the stock exchange. It is a commodity like gold. Except you can’t drink gold or water your crops with gold.

I’m used to being laughed at by people who prefer the view from their own perspective, one fraught with denialism. I understand that it’s not easy to accept reality. But this is where we’re headed. I’ve already purchased land in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan surrounded by Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron.

I don’t know whether the U.S. will take care of these lakes like they should, but if they do, I’ll be leaving my granddaughter a beautiful piece of prime property.

So, once again, ha ha, sir.
