Thou Shalt Not Kill?

Very early this morning, the state of Indiana executed Joseph Corcoran. It was the first state execution in fifteen years. Joseph was in prison for the murder of four individuals. He suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. His last words were, “Let’s get this over with.”

To me, it has always been obvious that humans are not very well equipped to care for the lives we insist on bringing into the world. Between Mother Nature and humanity, unending pain and suffering is our lot in life.

As a child cursed with high levels of empathy, the world and its cruelty were too much for me. I have since learned to cover my eyes, look away, and get on with my life, so to speak. Sometimes, however, I allow myself to take a good, long look at what is going on. Once again, I’m horrified.

Joseph did not ask to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, nor did his victims ask to be targets of his delusions. Life is grim, and most of us are simply bumbling along, trying to miss the next bullet. I guess if truth be told, I really don’t see life as a gift. It’s more of an obstacle course without a road map, in my opinion. We’re all so lost.

I’ve included an article about Joseph’s case. There’s not much more I can add. Being bombarded with conflicting thoughts is common for me. I can’t make sense of things. All I know is that everyone appears to approve of one kind of killing or another. We just struggle with figuring out which type of killing our gods condone.
