If You Hate Diversity, You Hate My Family
I Will Not Forget
I have relatives who voted for Trump, and probably would vote for DeSantis if they lived in Florida. I do not take that lightly.
In fact, the families of both my husband and I are pretty equally divided between right and left ideologies.
America is clearly divided as well. Our two families bear that out.
But I also have a sister who’s married to a black man and a niece and nephew who are mixed. My son is married to a woman from Germany who is of Korean dissent. My granddaughter is mixed. My niece from another sister is fully transgendered.
All these family members are amazing by anyone’s standards.
We are proud of our diverse family which includes a registered nurse, a film major and successful entrepreneur, two professors holding PhDs in German literature, as well as my transgender niece who just presented a paper at Stanford and will earn her PhD from Northwestern this spring.
Between all of us we speak as many as ten languages. Most of us are international travelers who’ve spent lots of time abroad.
We’re living our best lives. Yet every day, we must deal with the psychological repercussions of hate and prejudice as well as the threat of oppression directed at us.
Interestingly, the side of the family that voted Republican is the churchiest of the two.
Needless to say, I’m terrified at what’s happening in this country. I look at my beautiful granddaughter who is brilliant, kind, interested in learning, speaks English and German, loves her Korean grandparents and relatives as much as she loves my husband and I but at the tender age of 13 is already aware that people in her school, neighborhood and town will cast votes in 2024 that will jeopardize her future.
I don’t know whether she’s also realized that she has many relatives who will vote against her best interests, but they will.
And when she finally understands this, I won’t know what to tell her. How do you tell your granddaughter that her uncles and aunts are voting for the party that keeps passing bills all over America that are a threat to her future?
How do I protect these dear, talented, kind, and hardworking family members from evil doers who want to harm them.
How do I protect them from what’s coming? Hell, it’s not COMING. It’s HERE. It’s gathering momentum and if we can’t find a way to stop it, things will keep getting worse with every passing day.
It doesn’t require a shaman to predict where this is all headed.
History has proven over and over again where these evil doers intend to go. They are going to restrict the personal autonomy of women, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and anyone and everyone with whom they have a vendetta.
Every day, I’m afraid to turn on my cell phone and look at the news.
Yet, despite all this fear and trepidation that I carry in my body because of the sheer evilness of complete strangers who don’t even know my family but want to harm them, I don’t know how to stop it.
I don’t even know how to convince my own relatives to stop supporting the evildoers.
Oh yes, we must vote, we must stand up to these evil doers, we must unite against them, but how, where, and when do we do this, and will it stop them in time.
To answer that question, I must look at history again, my friends.
It would behoove us all to do so. How has this scenario that we are undergoing right now turned out for others who’ve been through it in the past?
I think you know. I think I know.
Yet, it’s happening again. We’re watching it unroll before our very eyes as the evil doers get bolder and bolder. Anyone who cares about other human beings should be afraid. I know plenty of people that are deeply worried. But if you’re a white, heterosexual family you might not be losing sleep over it quite yet.
The more diverse your family is, the harder it will be to close your eyes and get a decent night’s sleep.
You’ve read the books and watched the movies that depict the horrors of evil doers upon pass societies. Not ancient history either. We’re talking recent deviltry. Inhumane acts that are bone chilling.
You know what I’m talking about.
Of course, the current evil doers who are doing the work of the devil are unwilling to admit that they want to hurt, even destroy people. Maybe they had ancestors who burned witches at the stake or put Jewish families in concentration camps. Maybe they have relatives who persecuted gay men or killed transgenders just for existing. Maybe this propensity to do evil was inherited through their DNA. I don’t know, but when I look into their eyes, i see pure evil.
And it makes me shudder.
No, not AGAIN I scream. This can’t be happening again. The human race has surely evolved by now. Surely, we aren’t still so full of hate, loathing, and evil.
But then I look at the other half of my family and I know the answer.
We haven’t changed. We’re still full of rage, anger, and hate. We still have psychopaths walking amongst us who make me so afraid that I wish I’d never brought children into this world.
The battle between good and evil, kindness and cruelty, and peace and war continues.
Wouldn’t it be nice if just once in the history of humankind, good could win over evil. Please let it be true. Please let there be enough people who are willing to stick their necks out for the oppressed and rise up against the evil doers to put a stop to this madness. I’d pray to a God, but history proves that gods don’t seem to intervene on our behalf.
It’s going to take the actions of people like you and me.
May there be more good people than evil doers and may those people have the courage and strength required to face the devil.
I implore every American to stop this madness.
