I wonder how many of these expats learn to speak Portuguese. My experience with American expats all over the world is that most do not. Oh yeah they can get by when it comes to ordering a meal or finding a gardener or a housekeeper, but they can’t even begin to grasp the subtleties of cultural differences or the history and current struggles of the people in another country if they don’t speak the language.
