I retired at age 54, sold my house, moved to a cheaper part of the US and paid cash for a house there. My main financial philosophy is zero debt, lowest overhead possible. Yes, I spend more than my bottom line each month because I can but I’m always very aware of my monthly lowest overhead. I’ve lived totally debt free for over 20 years. My savings has remained untouched and I refuse to risk a penny of it. If I have money to spare each year, I buy land. That’s how I diversify. Not just any land but land above the 45th parallel where scientists pretty much agree that the prime properties of the future lie. My last layer of security is a well stocked larder and a means to operate my freezer if I should lose my power.
