I only found out about the Schengen Agreement by accident while planning a nine month trip abroad.

Its not worth it, I’ve known Americans and Europeans who were barred from re-entering a nation for various reasons. The most common seems to be a nation changes its tourist visa rules, and you’re suddenly ineligible for a new visa. Something you didn’t know when you left. Needless to say, being denied re-entry to a nation is totally stressful but totally avoidable.
