Excellent article. As to the mask lies that you mentioned, my sister tried this weekend to buy bottled water before Hurricane Ian descends upon Florida. None to be found anywhere. The nature of the modern beast is to live day to day when it comes to essential items. We have become accustomed to walking into a supermarket and finding 30 different choices of bread for example at our fingertips. That kind of abundance and convenience has produced a society that would be totally helpless within less than a week of a disaster.
Personally, I think the same applies to the impending climate disaster. We can barely cope with one immediate threat at a time. Utter panic would be unleashed if even half of the population were told the truth and then didn't resort to wishful thinking and denialism.
Our communication capabilities are both a curse and a blessing.
