Empathy is great but it's got to be a two way street in order to collaborate and empathy alone doesn't fix things. The bottom line for me is that I 've seen very little progress in decades. I'm not just referring to the US. This is a world problem.
However, organic change tends to be what works best with Americans. We aren't a society that tends to sacrifice for the good of the group but rather a very individualistic society. Organic change can push Americans to get things done. Like back in the day when rivers were so polluted in America that they caught on fire. That bothered people, at least locally. Or if you run out of water, people might stop wasting water on their lawns. Shortages produce anxiety and sometimes people experiment with all kinds of things then.
But as I said, I've lowered my expectations considerably. I'm getting old now and probably won't live long enough to see how this works itself out.
