Dating is a cultural construct. Some cultures have arranged marriages. Other cultures don’t allow divorce once married. In the past no sex before marriage was touted as the way for a woman to behave. In our culture being legally married is promoted as the ultimate goal of any young girl. It’s all made up, however. I know many women who once they were able to support themselves never really enjoyed dating as a means to finding a spouse. They were able to enjoy life freely and unencumbered by a husband and children. It’s hard to defy cultural expectations because if you’re not careful the tribe will ostracize you. But I contend in the end we are the happiest when we live life on our own terms.
