Almost everywhere that I’ve lived abroad feels different than the US but I always remind myself that I’m a guest. I get to leave my domestic and cultural annoyances behind but am spared the domestic and cultural annoyances of the country where I’m a guest. It’s a privileged existence. I’ve lived in Mexico among a large expat community. I’ve also wintered in spain for 17 years. I lived in Guatemala when I was kid. I’ve also spent large chunks of time in Malta, Ireland, England, the isle of Saba. All very similar experiences. I get the best of both worlds.
